How to Compare Medicare Plans
Check Your Medications
Make a list of all your prescription drugs, including dosages. Every plan has a formulary that determines what drugs are covered and at what cost tier.
Verify Your Doctors
Check if your preferred doctors and specialists are in a plan's network. HMO plans require you to use in-network providers, while PPO plans offer more flexibility.
Compare Total Costs
Do not just look at the monthly premium. Factor in deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the maximum out-of-pocket limit to understand your true annual cost.
Review Extra Benefits
Many Medicare Advantage plans include dental, vision, hearing, fitness programs, and over-the-counter allowances. These extras can add significant value.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I compare Medicare plans in my area?
Enter your 5-digit ZIP code above to see all available Medicare Advantage and Part D plans in your area. You can compare premiums, star ratings, drug deductibles, and plan types side by side to find the best fit for your needs.
What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare?
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is administered by the federal government and covers hospital and medical services. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Advantage plans include all Part A and B benefits and often add prescription drugs, dental, vision, and hearing coverage.
What do Medicare star ratings mean?
Medicare star ratings range from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the highest quality. CMS evaluates plans annually based on member experience, customer service, health plan performance, and drug plan performance. Plans rated 4 stars or higher are generally considered high quality.
What is a Special Needs Plan (SNP)?
Special Needs Plans are a type of Medicare Advantage plan designed for people with specific conditions. D-SNP (Dual Eligible) plans are for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. C-SNP (Chronic Condition) plans serve people with certain chronic conditions. I-SNP (Institutional) plans are for people in long-term care facilities.
When can I change my Medicare plan?
You can change your Medicare plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 - December 7), the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 - March 31), or during a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify due to a life event such as moving or losing other coverage.
What is a drug deductible on a Medicare plan?
A drug deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket for prescription drugs before your plan begins to cover costs. Not all Medicare plans have a drug deductible. Plans with $0 drug deductibles start covering your medications right away, which can save you money at the pharmacy.
Can I compare Medicare plans without talking to an agent?
Yes, you can use the search tool above to browse available plans in your area. However, a licensed Medicare agent can help you evaluate plans based on your specific doctors, medications, and healthcare needs. Meeting with an agent is free and can save you time.
